2008 Summer Reading Assignments
June, 2008
Dear Middle School Student,
This should be a very exciting summer for all of us as we await our move into our new home! So that we can begin the academic school year quickly, the teachers in the Core Department have selected some required reading that will help to introduce you to the major themes that your Core class will be addressing in the coming school year. This required reading also helps both the students and the teachers to get the new school year’s Core adventure started right away! Most of all, we believe that you will find these books enjoyable. Of course, all of the Middle School teachers hope that you spend some time reading during your summer vacation.
The titles of these required readings are attached. It is important that you own a copy of these books so that you can read actively, highlight or make marginal notes, and bring the books to Core class when they are discussed.
You will also find a list of specific questions or ideas to guide your active reading, as well as directions as to how to prepare your written response to these questions for Core class. It is very important that you use these guide questions as you read because they offer guidance not only about what you might look for as you read, but also the types of thinking about literature that will be stressed when these books are discussed in Core class.
Your teachers hope you'll enjoy both the required and recommended books and will come to class eager to discuss them in the fall. Enjoy your summer and happy reading!
Sincerely,
Leslie Pugach
